Sen. David Ulibarri has introduced an anti-double dipping bill at the state legislature in Santa Fe.

Double dipping is when a government employee retires, and after a required 90-day waiting period, returns to work, collecting both a pension and paycheck.

Ulibarri’s bill — SB207 — eliminates double dipping in two steps.

First, the bill extends the period between retirement and reemployment to 12 months from 90 days. Second, if a retiree returns to work, his or her pension would be suspended during the reemployment.

Last year, the state legislature approved a bill that would’ve ended double dipping, but it was vetoed by Gov. Bill Richardson.

Many legislators have promised to pass another anti-double dipping bill at this year’s session.
